Swimming & Diving: Three Pool Records Fall as Patriots Cruise Past EA

FORT WASHINGTON – Germantown Academy's swimming and diving teams had their final home meet of the season on Jan. 23, facing off against Inter-Ac League opponent Episcopal Academy, and did so in style. Not only did the boys and girls teams earn wins to stay undefeated on the year, but three pool records were broken in the process.

The win is the third of the season for the boys (3-0-1) and the fourth for the girls (4-0). All-told, the Patriots touched first in every event, but one on the night.

Girls Highlights

  • Emily Hamill '25 posted a winning day in the 200 IM (2:04.62) and 100 Free (49.82), breaking the pool record of 50.12 set by Katharine Riefenstahl '08 in the latter. 
  • Sarah Freeman '25 took first in the 50 Free (23.99) and 100 Butterfly (57.39)
  • Amelia Gipson '27 took the 200 Free in 1:53.35. She also won the 100 Backstroke in 58.86.
  • Gipson, Isa Lieu '24, Arden Keitel '27, and Camryn Jones '26 went 1:49.44 in the 200 Medley Relay to open the meet.
  • Hamill, Freeman, Keitel, and Karly Boles '25 won the 200 Free Relay in 1:35.50, almost 10 seconds faster than the second-place team from EA.
  • Hamill, Freeman, Gipson, and Boles won the 400 Free Relay in 3:27.87, almost 17 seconds faster than the second-place group.
  • Laurel DePolo '25 took the top spot in the diving portion of the meet, earning 258.82 points.

Boys Highlights

  • Brandon Fleck '25 touched first in the 50 Free (20.72) and 100 Free (45.14), setting the GA pool record in the latter. Not even thirty minutes later, Fleck broke his own mark by going 44.61 while leading off the 400 Free Relay.
  • Landon D'Ariano '24 set the pool record in the 200 IM, going 1:48.12 to break the mark set by Reece Whitley of Penn Charter in 2018. D'Ariano also touched first in the 500 free (4:28.69), winning by almost 30 seconds.
  • Andy Zhou '24 took the top spot in the 100 Fly with a time of 51.64, while Heston Steckel '26 took second in 53.48.
  • GA swept the 200 Freestyle, with Dylan Shapiro '25, Andrew Thompson '25, and Steckel going 1-2-3.
  • GA swept the 100 Backstroke, with Zhou, Dylan Nier '27, and Ryan Wanner '27 going 1-2-3.
  • Brendan Hodgens '24 and Nash Salomon '28 took the top two spots in the diving portion of the meet. Hodgens recorded 288.75 points, while Salomon earned 2:07.52.

The Patriots are back on the road on Jan. 30 as the teams travel to Malvern Prep. The boys will be taking on the Friars, while the girls will compete against The Academy of Notre Dame.
